Philosophy of the Work
I Entered with It. I Shall Depart with It.
This work is dedicated to the Entered Apprentice—the first step in Freemasonry, where a person arrives with nothing but a willingness to begin.
Two ordinary nails form the outline of the Apprentice's apron. No fabric, no decoration, no rank. Only a symbol reduced to its essence.
The inscription, "I entered with it. I shall depart with it.", is a reminder that the first lesson is also the last.
Freemasonry often speaks of progress through degrees, titles, and offices. Yet none of these accompany a person beyond life. What remains is the character forged while carrying the simplest apron.
The work asks whether wisdom is truly an ascent, or a return.
Perhaps the highest achievement is not becoming greater than others, but remaining faithful to the principles with which the journey began.
The nails themselves reinforce this idea. They are construction tools—objects that join rather than divide. They symbolize the lifelong labor of building one's own moral temple. Long before they became a symbol, they were instruments of work.
The Apprentice enters with the obligation to shape himself.
He leaves with nothing but the result of that work.
And perhaps that was always the only thing worth carrying.
